Or has NI done what it needed to do and helped to focus curricular selections and research directions in new ways, so that these trappings aren't necessary any more?

No, there is still certainly a need for NI symposia, books and so forth. Most work on computational media and narrative focuses on narrative from a design perspective (e.g. narrative as a metaphoric resource for web design), from a literary perspective (e.g. interactive fiction, hypertext fiction), or as a static (non-interactive) resource for increasing engagement in interactive experiences (e.g. the static narrative in RPG and adventure games). NI, to the contrary, considers narrative from an AI perspective, which tends to be process intensive, whether it's story generation, narrative interpretation by human beings, or story understanding systems. There will be more NI venues in the future - I will work to make sure this happens.
